Care of Aging Adults with Nausea / Vomiting / Diarrhea

 

For vomiting:

  • If they have medication (i.e. anti-nausea medicine such as Zofran), instruct them to take it. (**REMINDER – do not administer this medication to the client, just remind them to take it.)

  • Client should not eat or drink anything 2 hours after vomiting

  • After 2 hours with no vomiting, sip small amounts of water or suck on ice chips every 15 minutes for 3 – 4 hours. (1 Tablespoon every 5 – 10 minutes)

  • Next, client can sip clear liquids for 3 – 4 hours (For example: water, Gatorade, clear broth, sprite, and jello.) NO citrus juices or milk

  • When they can tolerate clear liquids for several hours without vomiting and if they’re hungry – try the following BRAT diet if there are no allergies:

    • B – bananas

    • R – rice

    • A – applesauce

    • T – dry toast

  • For 24 – 48 hours after last episode of vomiting, avoid foods that can irritate or may be difficult to digest such as: alcohol, caffeine, fats / oils, spicy food, milk or cheese

 

 

 

If diarrhea is only symptom

  • Try Imodium (**REMINDER – do not administer this medication to the client, just remind them to take it.)

  • Follow bland diet (see BRAT above)

  • After having a soft, formed stool, you can resume a normal diet

 

 

 

 

Prevention:  wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
