Assisting with Dressing/Undressing

Caregiver steps if client is able to ambulate or sit:
•    Always wash hands with warm soap/water before assisting
•    Client should be sitting on the side of their bed when possible, or laying down to reduce the risk of falling
•    To promote client independence, ask client to assist when possible.
•    Remove shirt/clothing from a client’s weaker side first, so they can use their stronger side to assist with the remaining steps
•    When putting clothing back on, begin by putting clothing on their stronger side first so they can assist with the remaining steps

Caregiver steps if client is bed-bound and not able to sit up or assist
•    Always wash hands with warm soap/water before assisting
•    Explain process to client, and begin by gathering all items needed to dress client
•    Assist client with turning to one side if safe to do so.  Gently pull down on clients pants or begin to pull shirt over one side of clients body
•    Assist client with laying flat on their back, and turning to the other side
•    Once client turned to the other side, assist with gently pulling down on clients pants or pulling remaining part of shirt over the rest of their body
•    Check for reddened areas or sores.  If any are visible notify your supervisor asap
•    Assist client with turning to gently place pants/shirt on client using steps above
•    Always pull on shirt gently to reduce any wrinkles client may be laying on to avoid discomfort and reduce risk of pressure areas
